POINTS TO CONSIDER WHEN VENTING GAS FIRED EQUIPMENT

a. Chimneys with “no tile liners” must be lined with a metallic vent system. b. “Single Fan Assisted Appliances” (80% furnaces typically) vented into a “tile lined only” chimney are prohibited by AGA- GAMA and are severly limited by NFPA-54 venting tables. c. “Single Fan Assisted Appliances” may be vented into a INTERIOR ONLY, tile lined chimney when combined with a “Natural Draft Appliance” meeting the sizing requirements in NFPA-54 tables. Otherwise a metallic liner is required. d. Exterior chimneys, (one or more sides exposed) require metallic liner.

e. Careful consideration needs be exercised when a furnace replacement using sidewall venting(or a heat pump) leaves a small diameter appliance (water heater) vented into a large tile liner. The free area of the tile liner (in square inches ) must not exceed 7 times the free area in square inches of the water heater outlet in square inches. Should the tile exceed the allowable square inches, a metallic liner must be installed. (AGA-GAMA & NFPA)

NEGATIVE INTERIOR BUILDING PRESSURE

Today’s home are constructed with high insulation barriers to eliminate heat loss. This tight construction effectively eliminates outside air infiltration as well. Previously, some amount of outside air infiltration was the norm and did not pose the possibility of negative interior air pressure. Current construction techniques may cause the home to be so airtight that consideration must be given to the introduction of outside air to prevent the possibility of negative interior pressures and to provide necessary fresh air to the living space. (Negative interior air pressure is developed during operation of bath fans, range hoods, clothes dryers, and/ or fuel-burning equipment.) Without the introduction of outside air and the resulting air change, chemical concentrations also build up in the home. IE: Formaldehydes from carpets, drapes, and cabinets; lye from plaster; chlorines from detergents, etc.) Excessive humidity build up may also occur.

Buildings with a negative interior air pressure may cause improper combustion of fuel burning equipment, and further prevent the proper venting of products of combustion. (IE: 15 cubic feet of air is required to provide proper combustion of one cubic foot of natural gas. Improper combustion and the resulting improper venting can flood the living space with carbon monoxide, nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide. All of which are hazardous.)

What to do…. Introduce outside air. This can be accomplished efficiently thru the use of outside intake air products. The R.E.Michel Company offers products to resolve this issue.
