IMPORTANCE OF CLEANING WHEN INSTALLING A STEAM BOILER

Boilers are produced incorporating lubricants and other petroleum products in the manufacturing process. When the boilers are installed, lubricants to aid pipe threading are used, fluxes for soldering are used, and pipe thread sealants are used. These products may not have a serious detrimental effect on a hydronic installation, but do have a serious detri- mental effect on steam installations if not removed from the internal water during start up.

Steam boilers simply produce steam for heating the building from water contained in the lower portion of the boiler. The water is heated until steam is produced in the upper portion of the boiler (steam cavity). The steam leaves the boiler, fills the radiation, condenses, and the condensate returns to the boiler. The cycle continues until the building thermostat is satisfied.

FUEL ARMOR

Fuel Armor is designed to protect a fuel oil system in less than one minute per year. A single treatment is all that is required for preventative maintenance on the oil tank and contents. A single treatment will keep the oil cleaner, the heating system components cleaner, extend the fuel storage time, and reduce service calls.

Fuel Armor migrates from the original treatment dose to a “main- tenance dose” throughout the year. Stabilizers improve the stability of the oil, while dispersants and anti-oxidants reduce sludge build- up and prevent new build-up. Additionally, rust inhibitors help prevent corrosion in the tank. Fuel Armor is recommended for all levels of biofuel.

If the oils, pipe dopes., etc are not “skimmed”, (removed from the boiler water), they float on the surface of the water in the boiler. The increased surface tension created by the contaminates, causes violent agitation of the water as the steam bubbles (created thru out the water in the lower portion of the boiler) try to break thru the layer of contamination at the water surface. This can cause a “wet header”, water level surging, banging and a host of other problems associated with vibration and expansion in the system. Any/all of these prob- lems will cause customer dissatisfaction and the inevitable “call-back”.
