EARLY HEAT EXCHANGER FAILURES
We are all aware of premature heat exchanger failures in some form or another. One major cause of shortened heat exchanger life is chlorinated substances being stored, sprayed, or used in the area around heating equipment. The vapors from the chlorinated products mix with the combustion air to the equipment and are burned. When this happens, the chlorine is released from the compound and mixes with water vapors created by the combustion process to form hydrochloric acid. The acid collects on the steel heat exchanger and corrosion begins. Each repeat cycle of the equipment adds to the corrosive process and premature heat exchanger failure is a certainty. Early indicators of this corrosion process might be unusual flame color, scale deposits in the com- bustion chamber, or burner tray, or pit holes in the vent pipe. Types of chlorinated products range from cleaning agents (Some of which the servicing company may be using) to cans of insecticides, paints, rugs with blown rubber backing and many other compounds too numerous to list. The labels on the products must indicate chlorinated ingredients as they are hazardous substanc- es. Installation crews and service personnel need to be aware of this potential problem and advise homeowners when chlorinated compounds are found. When called upon to replace a heat exchanger, for a furnace, unit heater, or steel boiler, (water heaters may have the steel combustion area eaten away) check for scale in the combustion chamber or burner tray, or pitting on the vent pipe. If these indicators are present, check for corrosive material storage in the area.
