AIRFLOW RESISTANCE
Everyone is aware of the effect a clogged/dirty air filter has on the operation of warm air heating equipment. However, we some- times forget the effect a high merv air cleaner/filter may have on the equipment. The installation of a high merv air cleaner/filter may cause similar air flow problems. As the merv increases, the resistance to air flow also increases. Heating/cooling equipment may shut down on limit, and/or cooling coils may freeze. Almost always an airflow problem is suspected. When the airflow is checked, verify airflow CFM and static pressure. A finding of low airflow and high static pressure will lead to determining the cause. Often times the only change to the system was the addition of a “better”, higher Merv cleaner/filter. Problems may not surface immediately upon installation, but as the cleaner/filter loads up, the resistance increases. Air flow (CFM) on residential equipment is normally rated at .5 “ static. On installations where the ducting is marginal, or blower CFM rating is marginal, the ad- dition of the added resistance created by a high merv air cleaner/filter may increase the system static beyond the blower’s capability to supply the required volume of air.
So...should you receive a service call advising the system functioned well and then suddenly began to have airflow problems, check to determine whether a high merv air cleaner/filter may have been installed on the job. Also remember the resistance to air flow will increase as the filter/cleaner loads up over time. A new media, or cleaning, may only resolve the problem temporarily. Addi- tional ducting and/or larger blower motors may be required to solve the problem.
