FRESH AIR FOR THE LIVING SPACE

Todays home construction permits considerably less outside air to infiltrate the structure than older homes. Even owners of older homes are opting for more insulation, low leakage windows and doors to reduce infiltration of outside air.

Current sources estimate todays indoor home enviroment to contain up to ten times more pollutants than outside air. In the quest for higher energy efficient, low air filtration homes, a prime source of cleaner, fresh air has been lost. What can be done to reduce the accumulated levels of pollutants in the living area? Windows and doors can be opened when the weather is mild, and perhaps a window could be cracked open when the weather is moderate. However, opening doors and windows to allow fresh air into the home defeats the purpose of an energy efficient home when the heating, or cooling, equipment is operating.

The use of a Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV), or an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) is a recommended method to replace the stale, polluted indoor air, with a regulated amount of outside air, while conserving energy related to the operation of the home heating/cooling equipment. HRV’s bring in outside air, temper it, and exhaust inside air. ERV’s can perform the same function with the added benefit of humidity regulation. In geographic areas that experience high humidity levels, the humidity regulation by an ERV can reduce the load on cooling equipment, resulting in equipment run time savings. Both HRV’s and ERV’s reduce energy losses experienced with direct outside air introduction to the home.

These systems are recognized by the American Lung Association, (A.L.A.) and the Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.) for their ability to reduce accumulated interior contaminates such as gases, (VOC’s) Volatile Organic Compounds and other pollutants. Use of these units will result in a healthier, more comfortable interior environment.
