SYSTEM SUPERHEAT

Superheat is the term used to represent the amount of heat added to a refrigerant above its boiling point and is an excellent over- view reference for checking system charge and performance.

How do you determine what the superheat is on an A/C unit? You need a set of manifold gauges, a temperature tester, and a temperature-pressure chart for the refrigerant in the system. Close the handwheels on your manifold and loosely connect the hoses to the unit service ports. Vent the hoses, tighten them to the service ports and open the service valves if required. Turn on the unit and let it run for 10-15 minutes to allow the unit to reach normal operating conditions. Strap your temperature tester sensor, or thermometer to the suction line at the condensing unit and insulate it from outdoor ambient temperature. Read your suction pres- sure and convert it to the corresponding saturation temperature per your pressure-temperature chart. To calculate the superheat, take the measured suction line temperature from your temperature tester and subtract the converted saturation temperature.

Example: Suction Pressure = 68.5 PSIG Converted to Saturation Temperature = 40°F Suction Line Temperature = 52°F Superheat = 52°F - 40°F = 12°F Superheat

Normal systems should not have superheat in excess of 20 degrees F

High superheat is a normal indicator of system undercharge. Low superheat may be an indicator of airflow problems, or system overcharge. Use the Refrigeration System Troubleshooting Chart in the Technical Information section of the R.E.Michel Catalog for more complete diagnosis.
