Heat Pump Helper™
The Heat Pump Helper™ concept is a combination of standard components -- an oil-fired water heater, a hydronic coil or air handling unit and a power sidewall vent system -- used in conjunction with a heat pump outdoor unit to form an integrated, high efficiency heat- ing/cooling system. Many homeowners find that they are less than satisfied with the comfort level, with relatively low discharge air tem- peratures and gradual room temperature changes, provided by a heat pump operating in its regular heating mode. And, when the standard heat pump system operates with auxiliary resistance electric heat -- usually when outdoor temperatures are 35° or below or when a room change of more than 2° is selected at the thermostat -- the increased draw of electrical power can produce noticeable increases in utility costs. A Heat Pump Helper™ system is a practical, economical and sensible alternative, roviding a greatly increased level of heating comfort, substantially reduced utility costs which can recoup the cost of installation, and the addition bonus of a nearly inexhaustible supply of domestic hot water.
Shown below are the basic applications and components of the Heat Pump Helper™ system. More detailed information is available from you R.E. Michel Company sales representative or local R.E. Michel branch.
NEW INSTALLATIONS
In a new or replacement installation, a complete air handling unit contain- ing both cooling and hydronic heating coils is used. Air handler models are available with a circulator module already built in making for a compact and time-saving installation. Electrical and piping system controls may vary accord- ing to the requirements of each system (see “Controls” and “Hydronic & Steam System” sections of this catalog).
The basic components of this system are:
Water heater
Air handling unit Sidewall vent system Heat pump outdoor unit Oil storage tank
Manufacturer: Bock, Aero, Bradford White Aquatherm/First Company Tjernlund, Field
American Standard, Armstrong, Airease, Comfortmaker, Ducane, and Heil
ADD-ON TO EXISTING SYSTEM
In applications where an operating heat pump is already in place, the Heat Pump Helper™ system can eliminate the need for costly electric resistance heat, and can be installed using the existing air handling unit. A hydronic coil is adapted to the existing ductwork and piped to the oil-fired water heater which replaces the existing electric water heater. The water heater is vented through a compact sidewall venting system.
