Used to replace a Rheem/Ruud condenser fan motor where the original was held in place by four cables.

CAPACITOR SIZING

When you wire two capacitors in parallel, the “mfd” rating becomes the total of the two “mfd” ratings on the capacitors and the voltage rating becomes equal to the lowest voltage rating on either capacitor.

Example: 35 “mfd” # 370 VAC + 10 “mfd” @ 440 VAC = 45 “mfd” @ 370 VAC.

When you need a 75 “mfd” @ 440 VAC and you don’t have one, check your truck stock for a 35 “mfd” @ 440 VAC plus a 40 “mfd” @ 440 VAC.

Can we do anything to match up the odd combinations of “mfd’s” on these type capacitors? Sure we can.

First we need to understand what the terminals are on the 3 terminal capacitor. Look at your three terminal capacitor and note the markings for each terminal. One terminal is “Fan”, one is “Herm” and one is “C”.

Let’s say we need to replace a three terminal capacitor that is rated 35 “mfd” and 10 “mfd” @ 370 VAC. In our truck stock we find a three terminal rated at 35 “mfd” and 5 “mfd” @ 370 VAC and a separate 5 “mfd” @ 370 VAC two terminal capacitor. On the replacement capacitor between the “C” , “Herm” and “Fan” terminals the “mfd” rating is 5 “mfd”. Between “C” and “herm” the “mfd” rating is 35 “mfd”. If we use both capacitors we can put a jumper wire from the 5 “mfd” capacitors “C” terminal to the “C” terminal on the three terminal capacitor. Then put a jumper from the other un-marked terminal of the 5 “mfd” capacitor to the terminal marked “Fan” on the three terminal capacitor. We have now wired the 5 “mfd” capacitor in parallel to the fan side of the three terminal capacitor. We now have an “mfd” rating of 35 and 10 “mfd”. Many mfd combinations can be matched this way.
