During the gybe, the helm may cross the cockpit facing in either direction, depending on the layout. When crossing, helm & crew should avoid the mainsheet falls and traveller and never allow them to ‘slam’ over. It may be safer for the helm to cross the cockpit after the boom has gybed. Usually, keelboats are centre-mainsheet rigged, so the technique from here can be used, particularly if smaller and lighter. Larger, heavier ones may use the method described below. The mainsheet can be controlled by either the helm or a ‘trimmer’.
