ADVICE & INFORMATION
Camping Card Camping Card International Essential in Portugal, Austria and recommended for most countries. This is a useful document, acceptable at most campsites in lieu of a passport and also providing 3rd party personal liability insurance. The card is provided free of charge to those who take out a Red Pennant Motoring policy, or they can be purchased from the Club at a cost of £5.50. One card is required per outfit.
Bail Cover for Spain Is not essential but nevertheless is provided with The Caravan Club’s Red Pennant ‘Motoring’ and ‘Motoring & Personal’ Holiday Insurance and is also available if you arrange your motor insurance through The Club’s Motor Cover service.
Vehicle Excise Licence While driving abroad it is necessary to display a current UK vehicle excise licence (tax disc).
age of 16 or the passport on which the child is included expires or needs to be amended. Children aged 16 and over already have to hold their own passport and are not affected by these changes. Information on visa requirements and passport validity can be obtained from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office
www.fco.gov.uk (travel advice) or by calling 0845 850 2829. In some countries it is a legal requirement to carry a form of photographic ID with you at all times.
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED: Insurance/Green Card Members visiting EU countries and Switzerland do not need an actual Green Card, as UK certificates of motor insurance are, by law, accepted as evidence that the compulsory motor insurance is in force. However, it is still necessary for you to notify your insurers and obtain confirmation that they will extend your policy to include the countries you are visiting, you need to carry your original insurance certificate with you.
Driving License Any full driving license issued in the UK is legal to use abroad, however, only driving licenses issued after 1991 are compliant with the EU format. If you hold a license that was issued before 1991 we recommend that you change it for a new photo-card license or take an International Driving Permit with you. This will avoid difficulties with local law enforcement not being able to understand licenses issued before 1991. An International Driving Permit may be purchased from most motoring organisations including Green Flag
www.greenflag.com or selected Post Offices, details of which can found at
www.postoffice.co.uk or by calling 0845 7223 344.
Vehicle Registration Document V5C document/Vehicle registration document (previously called Log Book), must be carried with you at all times, and must be the original not a photocopy, if you do not own the vehicle you should also carry a letter of authorisation.
MOT Certificate of Roadworthiness This must be taken abroad with you and applies to vehicles over 3 years old. (Original document not a photocopy.)
TRAFFIC REGULATIONS AND EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS Each country has its own traffic and driving regulations. Speed limits vary and on-the-spot fines can be levied, in some countries, on those who exceed them. The number of speed cameras in European countries is increasing. Heavy penalties are applied to those who drink and drive and the alcohol limits are often well below those of the UK. Fire extinguishers, first- aid kits and spare bulbs are compulsory in certain countries and strongly recommended at all times. A comprehensive list of compulsory equipment requirements for Europe can be found on our website:
www.caravanclub.co.uk (practical advice/overseas advice).
Use of hand-held phones whilst driving is totally banned in many European countries. Their use can entail heavy on-the-spot fines or even a court appearance with subsequent heavy penalties. Some countries restrict the speed limits of drivers who have held full licenses for less than two years and all have stringent regulations on the use of seatbelts and impose a limit on the age of children who can occupy the front seats of cars, e.g. in France it is illegal for children under 10 to ride in the front seat.
Authorities in a number of European countries have authorised an agency, Euro Parking Collection, to recover outstanding fines on their behalf. If you, as the registered keeper of your vehicle, commit a traffic offence, for example a parking infringement, failure to pay a road toll, failure to stop at a red light or use of a bus lane, then EPC will trace the vehicle with the assistance of the DVLA and you can expect to receive a notice setting out the fine payable, followed by reminders.
