The site is 1.5 miles/2.4km from the historic town of Ainsa, renowned for its 12th century Aragonese architecture, and about 25 miles/ 40km from the border with France. The site is situated near the Ordesa National Park, famous for its cliffs, canyons and outstanding scenery. However, the park is only accessible by car between May and September due to snow in the winter.

Situated alongside a fast-flowing river, Camping Peña Montañesa itself is quite large and offers shady pitches of about 60m2 marked out by trees, which can sometimes make pitching very difficult. Approximately one-third of the pitches are used for statics and chalets. There are two sanitary blocks on site, both with modern facilities, which can become stretched in high season. Details of local activities and attractions are available from reception and there is also an excellent multi-sports area on site. Members report a local festival causes some noise in mid-August.

EXTRA COMMENT Access to the site via the Bielsa tunnel from France is steep and winding, a good power/weight ratio is required. Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times. This site is also available to book during the winter months via our 2011/12 Winter Escapes brochure.

Camping El Escorial is located some 30 miles/48km northwest of Madrid and is well placed for visiting the capital, the El Escorial San Lorenzo Monastery and the Valle de los Caidos (Valley of the Fallen) – a memorial to those killed during the Spanish Civil War – and the resting place for General Franco. Markets are held in El Escorial on Wednesdays.

The site is large and due to its location, very busy, especially on weekends, with marked pitches of about 90m2. Most are covered by a layer of canvas which could present a problem for tall outfits, and access to some pitches can also be tight for larger outfits. There are modern sanitary blocks on site, which are kept clean. A good range of sporting facilities are also available, including three unheated swimming pools and three tennis courts.

EXTRA COMMENT Dogs must be kept on a lead and muzzled at all times.
