Corresponding angles are the angles in matching corners, when any two lines are crossed by a transversal.
By the end of this section you should be able to: ● identify corresponding angles
● fi nd the measure of corresponding angles in parallel lines
Four pairs of corresponding angles are shown below. Note: there are no parallel lines in these diagrams. O M P N
To fi nd corresponding angles look for the ‘F shape’. A pair of corresponding angles is made up of one angle inside the lines and one outside the lines.

Discuss and discover
Working with a partner, draw two lines (1 and 2) that are an equal distance apart and parallel, as shown. Draw a third line that cuts both lines at any angle, as shown.
(i) Mark the angles X, Y, W, Z, M, N, O, P (ii) Mark the corresponding angles |∠W| and |∠Z| (iii) Using a protractor, measure |∠W| and |∠Z| (iv) What can you conclude about |∠W| and |∠Z|? (v) Repeat parts (i) to (iv) for the other pairs of corresponding angles. What have you discovered about the corresponding angles within parallel lines?
