2. It has been observed that a particular plant grows exactly 2·5 cm per week. It measured 2 cm when it arrived at the garden centre.
(i) Create a table showing the growth of the plant over 6 weeks. (ii) Draw a graph to show the plant's growth over 6 weeks. (iii) Find the slope of this graph. (iv) What do you notice about the slope of the graph and the rate at which the plant is growing? (v) Do you think that this plant could continue growing at this rate forever? Give a reason for your answer.
3. A car has 10 litres of fuel. For every 8 kilometres it travels, it uses 1 litre of fuel. (i) Create a table showing how much fuel the car uses over 80 kilometres. (ii) Draw a graph to show how much fuel the car will use over 80 kilometres. (iii) Find the slope of this graph. (iv) What do you notice about the slope of the graph and the rate at which the car is using fuel? (v) How much fuel has the car used after travelling 48 kilometres?
4. Joe is beginning a new weight-lifting programme. He lifts 24 kg on his fi rst visit to the gym. One week later, he progresses to lifting 28 kg. After two weeks, Joe is able to lift 32 kg. His progress continues in this way over a period of time.
(i) Create a table showing the weights Joe can lift over his fi rst eight weeks at the gym. (ii) Create a word formula to explain how the pattern of weights grows. (iii) After how many weeks will Joe be able to lift 124 kg? (iv) Will this pattern continue forever? Justify your answer.
