193 Early interests included the improvement of FIMS ion
sources based on solid metal emitters that had been “activated” by electro-formation processes, theoretical aspects of molecular ion production mechanisms, and the theoretical interpretation of the results of ion-energy measurements. One of his early papers (in 1968) involved the calculation (in the context of FIMS) of electrostatic field enhancement factors – atopic recently of interest to field electron emission researchers. Later work involved what is now called the “electrospray
ionization source,”which is based on a liquid “cone-jet” (better known as a “Taylor cone”) that emits droplets and ions from the jet tip. Franz-Wilhelm was again interested in how the technique worked. An outstanding piece of research was the measurement, with his collaborator R. Juraschek, of two pulsation frequencies associated with source operation. They interpreted these as associated these with: (1) tear-off and re-growth of the jet of the cone-jet, which led (after a number of repetitions) to the exhaustion of the liquid reservoir in the
cone, and hence: (2) re-growth of the cone. This exhaustion and re-growth of the cone provided the lower observed frequency. Other work, with several collaborators, left behind a
small mystery. In “negative-ion field ion microscopy” of tetracyanoehthylene polymerisation, they observed in the image the formation and movement of bright ring structures. Although the effect was largely explained, the full details of the image formation process remain elusive. The IFES community tended to see the more physical
aspects of Franz-Wilhelm’s work; the chemical mass spectro- metry community tended to see the more chemical aspects, of which there was also a considerable body of detailed work. Franz-Wilhelm is survived by his wife Erika, who – in
the days when there was often an organised “ladies/partners” programme – was also a regular attender at Symposia.
