palace complex is truly fascinating, with highlights including the 13th century BC Lion Gate, the Royal Palace and the Secret Stairway. We’ll cross the Corinth Canal to visit the site today, also taking in the Treasury of Atreus.
Dedicated to the God of healing, Epidaurus is another fascinating old city that had an important role in Ancient Greece. In the classical world, the city was a celebrated healing centre where sick people would come with the hope of being cured. We’ll head here next, visiting the huge Theatre of Epidaurus, known for its incredible acoustics.
Our final stop before we head to Olympia for the night is Nafplio, a pretty seaport town boasting an impressive castle and fantastic views across to Bourtzi, a fortified island at the entrance of the port. HOTEL NEDA, OLYMPIA (3-STAR)
DAY 5 Olympia On the banks of the River Alfios, Olympia is the site of the original Olympic Games, which began in 776 BC. We’ll explore the ancient city today, taking in the Temple of Zeus, the Palaestra, where Greek athletes practised wrestling, and the workshop of Phidias, a Greek sculptor, painter and architect. The Olympia Archaeological Museum is well worth a visit, and we’ll do just that this morning. We’ll travel over the impressive Rio- Antirrio bridge, the world’s longest
multi-span cable-stayed bridge, as we head to picturesque Nafpaktos. HOTEL NAFPAKTOS, NAFPAKTOS (3-STAR)
DAY 6 Nafpaktos The mountain village of Trikorfo is home to an intriguing monastery. Why not join today’s optional excursion, which takes us here. Later, we head to the small seaside village of Glyfada, where we’ll board a traditional boat for a short sail to Trizonia, the only inhabited island of the Corinthian Gulf. With no cars and peaceful beaches, this pretty fishing village is a great place to enjoy a late lunch in one of the local tavernas. HOTEL NAFPAKTOS, NAFPAKTOS (3-STAR)
DAY 7 Ano Chora Nafpaktos is a picturesque fortified port with spectacular views over the sea. We’ll get to know the town better today with a visit to the impressive Castle of Nafpaktos, followed by a walking tour. The Venetian-style Tower of Botsaris, which consists of two impressive towers, is a particular highlight.
Ano Chora is the largest of the mountain villages in the area, offering an authentic glimpse into Greek mountain life. We’ll have time to explore and enjoy a walk in the mountains before gathering at a local guest house. Here we’ll enjoy a demonstration of how traditional pies, bread and other local delicacies are cooked, before being served lunch. HOTEL NAFPAKTOS, NAFPAKTOS (3-STAR)
DAY 8 The Diakofto-Kalavryta Railway The Diakofto-Kalavryta Railway uses a traditional ‘cog’ train. Why not join our optional excursion today and step aboard for a truly unique experience. During our ride, we’ll take in stunning views of towering mountains, flowing water and the surrounding countryside as we pass through a gorge and several natural tunnels. We’ll have time to explore Kalavryta, a lovely town on the bank of the river Vouraikos, before we drive to the monastery of Mega Spileo, which was built inside a cave. DAY 9 Delphi Delphi was known as the navel of the Earth by the ancient Greeks, a place that people would visit to receive an ‘oracle’. The Sanctuary of Apollo was the most important site in Greece, and we’ll get to see this sacred landmark today. We’ll also take in the Treasury of the Athenians and the fascinating Museum of Delphi. A final stop is made at the picturesque village of Arachova before our final night in Athens.
Enjoy a farewell dinner at one of the local tavernas in the historical neighbourhood of Plaka. HOTEL TITANIA, ATHENS (4-STAR)
DAY 10 Athens to UK Today we’ll depart on our return flight to the UK.
