Rocca Calascio Castle

DAY 4 Farmhouse experience We leave Termoli this morning and learn all about the traditional cuisine of the Abruzzo region on an included excursion. At our farmhouse base we’ll harvest fresh vegetables and then prepare a seasonal feast. Dishes on the menu could include arrostincini, a lamb dish cooked on skewers. We’ll also try salamis, cheeses and olive oil, all accompanied by local wine. Everything we eat and drink has been grown or produced on the farm. Later we’ll drive to the town of Sulmona, where we stay for four nights. Dinner is included this evening. HOTEL OVIDUS, SULMONA (4-STAR)

DAY 5 Sulmona

Today we’ll delve into the ancient streets of Sulmona, birthplace of the Roman poet Ovid. We’ll see the aqueduct on Piazza Garibaldi and the Church of Santa Maria Annunziata with its majestic bell tower. The town is most famous for the confectionery known as ‘confetti’ – sugar-coated almonds which are traditionally given to friends and relatives at weddings and other special occasions. We’ll visit the Confetti Museum, where a display of antique machinery and memorabilia reveals the history of these sweet treats.

The afternoon is yours to explore Sulmona at your own pace. Alternatively, join an optional cooking class at the hotel which typically includes seasonal pasta dishes. Enjoy an aperitif as you cook and then enjoy what you have prepared for dinner. House wine, dessert and coffee are also included. HOTEL OVIDUS, SULMONA (4-STAR)

DAY 6 Abruzzo National Park & bear-watching

Enjoy a morning at leisure. This afternoon perhaps join our optional excursion to Abruzzo National Park, in the heart of the central Apennines. En route we’ll visit the charming little town of Pescasseroli and enjoy lovely views to the surrounding hills from the ruins of the castle. In the park we’ll take a walk through the huge, dense forest with a Local Guide, looking out for the endangered species that thrive in this habitat. We may see golden eagles, Apennine lynx, deer, chamois and otter. Rarest of all are the Marsian brown bears and although sightings are not guaranteed we may be lucky. As the day ends and the sun sets we’ll get the chance to observe other wildlife too, including wild boar and Apennine

wolves. Our excursion ends with a traditional dinner served in a cosy mountain hut. HOTEL OVIDUS, SULMONA (4-STAR)

DAY 7 Rocca Calascio Castle & Santo Stefano di Sessanio

Today we’ll discover more of the region of Abruzzo. Our first stop is at Rocca Calascio, the highest town in central Italy. Here you can admire the views from the castle to the Majella and Sirente Mountains. Thanks to its splendid location the castle has featured in a number of films including ‘The Name of the Rose’ and the fantasy adventure, ‘Ladyhawke’. Later we’ll visit Santo Stefano di Sessanio. Originally built with white stone, this village has been popular with visitors since medieval times and the 14th century cylindrical tower is the symbol of this hilltop jewel. This evening we’ll gather for a farewell dinner at the hotel. HOTEL OVIDUS, SULMONA (4-STAR)

DAY 8 Rome to UK

We’ll transfer to Rome today for the flight back to the UK.

Please note: This holiday includes walking in areas of rough ground, gradients and steps, often with no hand rails to offer assistance.
