to have tamed a wolf, creating a lasting peace between the animal and the townspeople.
This afternoon we’ll visit the sanctuary of La Verna, located in the Tuscan Apennines. In the summer of 1224 St Francis withdrew to this monastery and it is here that he received the stigmata, a term used by members of the Christian faith to describe body marks or sensations that correspond to the crucifixion wounds of Jesus Christ. Today the monks produce herbal remedies and liquors at the monastery. We’ll continue to our hotel on the shores of Lake Trasimeno, our base for the next 4 nights. Dinner is included at the hotel this evening. HOTEL LIDO, PASSIGNANO SUL TRASIMENO (3-STAR)
DAY 5 Orvieto & La Scarzuola We’ll travel to Orvieto this morning. This ancient town, set on a volcanic outcrop is famous for its magnificent gothic cathedral and its fine, light wine. Later we’ll visit the convent of La Scarzuola where a church is dedicated to St Francis. In the 1950’s an avant-garde architect built his ideal city around the
convent. A mix of architectural styles were used to create quite extraordinary buildings and a unique environment, all of which we’ll experience during our tour. HOTEL LIDO, PASSIGNANO SUL TRASIMENO (3-STAR)
DAY 6 Lake Trasimeno You are free to relax on the shores of Lake Trasimeno today. If you wish discover some of the wildlife of the lake on our optional tour. Lake Trasimeno is a stopping point for many migratory birds en route from Northern Europe to Africa. At the Naturalistic Oasis La Valle we’ll learn first-hand how birds are monitored and ringed and how their migratory habits are shared around the world. Later we’ll take the ferry to Isola Maggiore, a peaceful spot with just 18 residents. There will be time to enjoy lunch and visit the quaint lace museums. You may get the chance to engage with the local women who still produce lace and often sit sewing outside their homes.
This evening join our optional tour to a local farmhouse renowned for its heritage pulses. We’ll take a tractor and
trailer ride and enjoy lovely views of the lake before a traditional dinner of local produce. HOTEL LIDO, PASSIGNANO SUL TRASIMENO (3-STAR)
DAY 7 Bread-making lesson We’ll visit an organic farm this morning and discover how typical grains have evolved over the centuries. Rare types of vegetables are also grown here. A traditional bread making lesson will follow before we sit down to a delicious lunch of organic produce. Afternoon at leisure. This evening join your travelling companions for a farewell dinner at the hotel, the perfect end to your holiday. HOTEL LIDO, PASSIGNANO SUL TRASIMENO (3-STAR)
