We’ll also head to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre to see these endearing animals, also known as honey bears, whose numbers are dwindling due to deforestation and poaching.

After lunch, a short cruise takes us to the Kinabatangan River Wildlife Sanctuary – where we can look out for exciting creatures from kingfishers to proboscis monkeys – and through mangrove forests to our lodge. Late this afternoon we’ll look for more wildlife on an included cruise, and after dinner we’ll experience the jungle at night on a wonderful nature walk with an experienced guide. DAY 7 Abai After awakening to the sounds of the rainforest, you can join an early- morning river trip to the Pitas Lake to observe wildlife.

Later, we’ll head to Abai village where we’ll join the villagers as they plant trees – you can even help out if you like. We’ll then sit together to enjoy a simple lunch. Back at the lodge, enjoy an afternoon nature walk, when if you’re lucky, you could spot orangutans, silvered leaf monkeys and a host of

other species. A cruise on the river to notch up more spots rounds off our day perfectly. ABAI JUNGLE LODGE, ABAI (4-STAR)

DAY 8 Sukau

During a morning at leisure at the lodge, perhaps join some of your travelling companions and head off to explore your surroundings – stilted paths up to 800 metres long stretch into the forest, and animals often venture quite close.

As a group, our wildlife search continues this afternoon as we cruise up river to our next destination, Sukau, for an overnight stay. Here we’ll look out for primates, in particular orangutans, as well as pygmy elephants and exotic birds – some of the world’s most spectacular species are resident in Borneo.

After checking in to our lodge, we’ll take to the water again to enjoy spectacular views and continue to search for exotic wildlife. KINABATANGAN RIVERSIDE LODGE, SUKAU (4-STAR)
