DAY 1 UK to Barcelona Today you’ll depart on your flight to Barcelona, transferring on arrival to your hotel in Salou, on Spain’s Costa Dorada, or Golden Coast. Here you’ll find long stretches of soft sand lapped by the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean.

After time to settle into your comfortable room, meet with your travelling companions for a welcome drink before dinner.

DAY 2 Tarragona Our included excursion this morning takes us to the medieval city of Tarragona, the Spanish capital of the Roman Empire. During our guided tour we’ll visit the UNESCO-listed Tárraco archaeological site to see well-

72

preserved Roman ruins including an amphitheatre, city walls and forum.

Our final stop is the city’s spectacular Romanesque and Gothic cathedral before we head back to the hotel for an afternoon at leisure.

DAY 3 Salou Enjoy a free day to spend as you wish. Your hotel’s excellent facilities include outdoor and indoor swimming pools and a sauna, and the golden-sand beach is within easy walking distance, so maybe just relax and soak up the sun.

DAY 4 Barcelona

Set between the Mediterranean Sea and the hills of Montjuic, the cosmopolitan city of Barcelona is our destination

today. Its architectural treasures span more than 2,000 years of history, and we’ll begin our tour as we discover the remains of the Roman walls surrounding the Gothic Quarter, which is home to the city’s huge cathedral.

After a stop to enjoy our included packed lunch, we’ll have the chance to admire the unique and distinctive architecture of Antoni Gaudí. The Sagrada Familia is perhaps his most famous work, and this gigantic basilica, with its soaring spires, is simply awe-inspiring.

DAY 5 Salou Enjoy a leisurely day in Salou today. Alternatively, we offer an afternoon excursion, which is a must if you are a lover of the Spanish dry sparkling wine, cava.

We’ll head to the famous Codorníu cellars, one of Spain’s oldest family businesses, where we’ll learn about 450 years of wine production. Our audio-visual tour will take us through the estate on a trackless train, and then we’ll head underground to the cellars, where we’ll taste two cavas from Codorníu’s premium range.

DAY 6 Salou Today you may choose to join our optional excursion to the Cistercian Monastery of Santa Maria de Poblet. Founded in 1150 by monks from France, the monastery was closed down and abandoned in 1835 during the reign of Isabella II of Spain. In 1940, it was refounded and today 27 monks reside in this UNESCO-listed site, which has a 12th century church in its centre.

We’ll return to our hotel to enjoy an afternoon at leisure.

DAY 7 Salou There’s more time today for you to relax on the beach or enjoy your hotel’s facilities. As you are located right in the heart of Salou, you could choose to head into town with your travelling companions to explore at your own pace or shop for some last-minute souvenirs of your holiday.

DAY 8 Barcelona to UK Today we’ll transfer to the airport for the flight back to the UK.
