BURMA TOUR

Temple overlooking Mandalay Hill U Bein Bridge, Mandalay

Inle lake

ADD-ON Bagan Temples

morning of exploration. Begin with a stroll along the Irrawaddy River to a local market.

Paleik, or the Snake Pagoda is our next stop, where you’ll watch the daily washing and feeding ceremony of its three resident pythons.

Once in Bagan we’ll take a journey by horse and cart to three remarkable temples, ascending one to enjoy views of the sunset over the surrounding plains. Dinner is also a scenic affair – served in a local riverside restaurant. SHWE YEE PWINT, BAGAN (3-STAR)

DAY 6 Bagan Nyaung Oo Market is where the locals head to trade fresh produce and other goods, and we’ll sample this before heading to the Ananda Temple with its striking gilded spires and gold leaf-adorned Buddha images – arriving before the other tourists so we can enjoy its splendour in peace.

We’ll move on to a village monastery where we’ll participate in a traditional Buddhist ceremony. You’ll offer food to the monks and in return receive a blessing to ensure good luck and happiness.

This evening we’ll board a boat that will take us to a mid-river sandbank, where we’ll enjoy a private gala-style dinner with a cocktail. Enjoy traditional dance performances under the starry night sky as well as the stunning views of Bagan’s temples reflected in the river. SHWE YEE PWINT, BAGAN (3-STAR)

DAY 7 Kalaw The hill town of Kalaw has many attributes including a refreshing climate and stunning views. We’ll reach it via a short flight to Inle Lake and an onward scenic drive.

A stroll gives the chance to admire colonial buildings, the historic train station and a number of monasteries.

This afternoon take a walk around a local village and have the chance to meet with the residents. Step inside a family home or monastery to enjoy a cup of tea before our picnic lunch. PINE HILL RESORT, KALAW

DAY 8 Inle Lake Nyaung Shwe is a small town which stands at the gateway to Inle Lake. After a relaxing train journey through picturesque scenery we’ll board a private motorboat for a wonderful journey into this marvellous freshwater lake, situated 900 metres above sea level. We’ll see the local fishermen’s unique leg-rowing technique and admire the incredible floating gardens – islands of weed and water hyacinth on which vegetables are grown. AMATA GARDEN RESORT, INLE LAKE (3-STAR)

DAY 9 Inle Lake Sagar, in the far southern region of the lake, is a spot mostly unexplored by tourists. On our boat trip we’ll journey to this hidden village to discover more than a hundred sunken stupas, often partially hidden underwater.

We’ll continue to Thaya Gone, where you can climb to the top of a small hill for amazing views. We’ll also see how the villagers produce rice wine, which you can sample if you wish, before heading to Sae Khaung Pottery Village, to see traditional crafts. On our return boat journey look out for rice noodles and spun cotton drying in the sun. AMATA GARDEN RESORT, INLE LAKE (3-STAR)

DAY 10 Yangon After a short flight back to Yangon we’ll continue our sightseeing. The Shwedagon Pagoda – a golden stupa rising almost 98 metres above Yangon – is a truly awesome sight. Said to hold strands of Buddha’s hair and other holy relics, it is dripping in gold and encrusted with more than 4,500 diamonds. During our visit we’ll also learn about Burma’s fascinating Buddhist rituals from our Local Guide before ending our day with a sumptuous farewell dinner of Burmese specialities. SEDONA HOTEL, YANGON (4-STAR)

DAYS 11 & 12 Yangon to UK Scott Market is a warren of alleys and shops set amongst grand colonial architecture and cobbled streets. There’s time to visit this morning before our flight back to the UK, arriving on day 12.

Please note: This holiday includes walking in areas of rough ground, gradients and steps, often with no hand rails to offer assistance.
