Subaru BRZ
The BRZ is something of an outlier in the current Subaru catalogue, because the Japanese manufacturer wants to be known as a maker of SUVs, not sports cars. However, when you’ve got something as good as the BRZ up your sleeve, you’re not about to kill it off . Developed jointly with Toyota, which sells the same car as the GT86, the BRZ is a rear-wheel- drive, two-door sports coupe. It’s not the fastest thing in the world, as its engine isn’t turbocharged, and the interior fi nishing looks dated, but for a pure, balanced, super-sweet rear-drive handling experience, the BRZ is almost peerless. A turbocharged hot hatch might be quicker, but the Subaru is more fun at legal speeds.

Subaru Levorg
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Just one model
To say that the Subaru Levorg is a niche car is something of a serious understatement. Nevertheless, you have to admire Subaru for sticking to its guns and producing it. Powered by a 1.6-litre boxer petrol engine, the Levorg reminds us somewhat of Subaru past, with an un-subtle bonnet scoop suggesting that there may be more than the actual 170hp output. It powers all four wheels, but things aren’t helped by the fi tment of a CVT automatic gearbox. A high purchase price combined with annual motor tax of €570 make the Subaru Levorg a car that will only be bought by those that miss the fast Subarus of yesteryear.

Subaru Outback
The crossover estate car is a trend that is gathering pace, but one of the fi rst iterations of the type was the Subaru Legacy Outback, which debuted in 1994. It continues today, the Outback name now divested from the Legacy, and it off ers a high-riding, plastic-clad, 4x4 estate as an alternative to a traditional SUV. Its main problem these days is that it remains very expensive, even among premium rivals, but there’s much to recommend it – like its smooth ride, unbreakable four-wheel-drive traction and attractive, spacious interior. Shame the drivetrain choices aren’t a little more inspiring, as otherwise the Outback remains a likeable crossover estate.
