Honda Civic

In 2018, the accomplished Honda Civic range was widened by the addition of a curvy four-door saloon model. It joins the fi ve-door hatchback and, of course, the mighty Civic Type R high-performance variant. The hatchback has always been distinctly sportier looking (and to drive) than most C-segment cars in the sector, so the saloon off ers more conservative buyers

an alternative – and it’s more comfortable too. At the same time as that car’s arrival, Honda launched an updated version of its impressive 1.6-litre diesel engine, plus a new automatic transmission. Nonetheless, we still favour the turbocharged petrol engines, available in 1.0- and 1.5-litre capacities. They’re willing, smooth and have lots of personality, too.

Honda Jazz

It might not have as much visual appeal as some fi ve-door hatchbacks, but the Honda Jazz is one of the more underrated cars on the market. The interior is well-made and is deceptively spacious – and you can be sure it will look and work just as well in several decades. The Jazz is well- served by an effi cient 1.3-litre petrol engine, though it’s best sticking with the manual gearbox, as the automatic CVT is slow to react. A more powerful 1.5-litre petrol is also available on special order, though we suspect that the 1.3 will be adequate for most Jazz buyers.

Honda CR-V

For 2019 the Honda CR-V becomes a petrol-only range with a hybrid version also available. The CR-V has earned a sound reputation among SUV buyers for being both comfortable and practical. We think the updated engine line-up will add further to the car’s appeal. It is available with all-wheel drive, but if you don’t need that, a more effi cient front-wheel-drive transmission is also available, meaning a lower rate of motor tax. The elevated driving position and soft suspension make the Honda one of the nicer SUVs to drive, placing comfort above outright dynamism. The cabin is spacious and beautifully put together.
