Lexus IS
The Lexus IS, currently in its third generation (albeit after a couple of facelifts), has always been seen as a bit of a leftfi eld alternative to the established sports saloons from Audi, BMW and Mercedes. That position in the market looked to be cemented when Lexus announced the end of diesel production, but now, with a slow shift away from diesel in Ireland, the IS could gain popularity. It’s an attractive looking rear-drive saloon that seats four comfortably, or fi ve at a squeeze. The interior is beautifully put together, like all Lexus cars, and it’s well- equipped, even taking into consideration the relatively high starting price. The hybrid powertrain (there’s only one) is best at urban speeds, but isn’t out of its depth on the open road either. Just don’t expect an engaging driving experience.
Lexus UX
Even Lexus, a brand synonymous with exclusivity, wants a piece of the compact SUV market, and the UX is an entirely new model for the Japanese company, arriving in Ireland in 2019. The edgy styling of the UX indicates that Lexus is pitching this model at younger buyers (or at least, the young at heart). Its off ering is limited, with just the one hybrid engine available - though it is one that suits the UX well. Optional adaptive suspension is available, although we suspect most will be content with the standard setup. After all, while the UX is capable of sportier driving, the automatic CVT favours a more sedate pace.

Editor’s Choice
Lexus RX
The Lexus RX’s design stands out in all the right ways, and it features some lovely details, such as a ‘fl oating roof’ feature. Ease into the cabin and you quickly appreciate the level of craftsmanship on display, too. Every button and switch is solid, the dial for the volume seeming as if it’s from some high-end home audio system. Should you need room for more passengers, Lexus also off ers the RX L, which can carry seven. Even though the rear of the car is redesigned to accommodate this, it remains more a ‘fi ve-plus-two’ arrangement. Both models use the same 3.5-litre V6 hybrid system and, if you drive with a conservative right foot, it is silky smooth. Only if you try to use all of its performance does the refi nement slip. In urban settings, it is a joy to drive, as this is where the hybrid setup is most at home.
