BMW X1 What a transformation for the BMW X1. The original looked like little more than a mildly elevated 3 Series Touring, but without that car’s interior ambience. Now, the X1 is established as one of the best small SUVs made by a premium manufacturer, thanks to buckets of space inside, a raised-up driving position, decent dynamics and a great range of engines. Most versions use BMW’s xDrive four-wheel-drive system, though entry-level models with front-wheel drive, designated ‘sDrive’, are available for those that don’t need the extra traction, but still want the SUV look. Despite the fact that the X1’s name suggests it sits below the X2 in the line-up, it’s the more practical vehicle – and suits those with up to two kids.

BMW X2
Occupying the space between the more traditional looking X1 and X3 SUVs, the X2 is more like a raised hatchback; in fact, BMW calls it an SAC (Sports Activity Coupe). That sporty image translates into how it drives, with sharp steering and engaging handling, even in the sDrive front-wheel-drive versions. As with all BMW ‘X’ models, you can get all-wheel drive, along with a choice of gearboxes, though the more powerful versions come only as automatics. You get a little more room inside than a regular hatchback and as you might expect from a BMW the interior fi nish is to a high standard.

BMW X3
The BMW X3 has evolved into what is now a very well-rounded SUV that matches top-notch design with a quality interior and all-wheel drive as standard. Facing stiff competition from the Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW has doubled down on refi nement and to good eff ect. We think the X3 is the best all-round SUV that BMW currently produces, and is indeed good enough to make you think twice about whether you’d need the X5. For the keener driver, there is a hot M40i version with 360hp, while a fully electric model is due in the future. The 2.0-litre diesel and eight-speed automatic transmission make it a very good package, but the larger 3.0-litre engine is the best choice.
