2019 Preview
And more... there’s
While 2018 was a bumper year for new car launches, we expect 2019 to be just as busy – and not all of the interesting new models will be powered by battery. Our editor, Shane O’ Donoghue, previews the year ahead, from A to Z (ok, V…).
Porsche 911 W
hile the latest cars from Alfa Romeo are lovely creations, we’re not quite sure what’s coming next from
the Italian brand. Rumours suggest the next new model will be a GT coupe based on the underpinnings of the rear-drive Giulia saloon. Likewise, after a crazy year for new model launches, Audi is quiet about its plans for 2019. We expect a production version of the gorgeous e-tron GT concept (a pure EV) and a signifi cant overhaul for the Audi A4. We know that BMW will have another
hectic year ahead. A brand-new 1 Series will be launched at some stage (moving to front-wheel drive), as will a four-door version of the 2 Series Coupe. The just-launched new 3 Series saloon will also be joined by a Touring estate variant, while the 7 Series saloon and X1 SUV will both come in for midlife updates. The X6 will be replaced by a new vehicle and it’s possible that we may see an all-electric version of the BMW X3 later in the year. On top of all that, the 8 Series range will fi ll out with the introduction of
DS 3 Crossback
Convertible and Gran Coupe body styles, plus high-performance M8 versions of all. Elsewhere in the world, the DS brand
has been successfully separated from Citroën, but as yet there have not been any announcements regarding stand-alone DS showrooms in Ireland. We expect that to change in 2019, and the newest car to be launched will be the new DS 3 Crossback, a highly luxurious and distinctive compact crossover.
Audi e-tron GT concept Kia’s mainstream models were all
updated or replaced in 2018, so it’s focusing on niche cars for the coming months. First up will be the Proceed, based on the Golf- rivalling Ceed. Unlike this car’s predecessor, the Proceed has fi ve doors, but adopts a sporty estate design to diff erentiate it from the regular Ceed hatchback and SW estate. Sporty driving dynamics are also promised. Following on from that will be a new Kia Soul. This retains the quirky crossover appearance, but will only be sold in Ireland in electric format.
