Volvo XC60 Volvo’s recent revolution has been founded on its ‘SPA’ chassis and ‘Drive-E’ engines, the latter of which are no bigger than two litres in capacity. While this might sound like a recipe for underwhelming products that can’t match premium German opposition, nothing could be further from the truth – modern Volvos are stunning to drive and own, and the XC60 mid-sized SUV is one of the fi nest products in the Swedish company’s portfolio. It’s available with front- or all-wheel drive, with D3, D4 and D5 diesels augmented by T5 and T8 petrol options, the latter being a plug-in hybrid with more than 400hp. A stunning interior, elegant looks and exceptional refi nement are the hallmarks of the superb XC60.

Volvo XC40 Volvo V40
The V40 hatchback is Volvo’s cheapest model, but it feels like a relic of a bygone era, although there’s still much to recommend it if you want a premium, C-segment hatchback and you’re not prepared to buy German. It’s very comfortable to drive and has some of the latest turbo engines to call upon for motive power, but the dated looking dashboard and the cramped interior do hold the V40 back from greatness. Mind, it’s been on sale since 2012, so an all-new version is surely on the way…
110 Auto Ireland Guide to New Cars 2019
There isn’t a bad angle from which to view the Volvo XC40. Its design is modern yet hits the chunky SUV look perfectly, making it look substantial on the road despite its relatively compact size. Just as substantial is its pricing, making it very much a premium SUV. A good range of engines covers most bases, although all-wheel drive is only available in conjunction with a diesel engine. We’d happily forego that in favour of the 190hp T4 petrol engine with its automatic transmission. While it isn’t the most engaging driver’s car, the XC40 performs very well in urban environs.
