Dacia
Dacia Duster Ever since Dacia arrived on the Irish market, its stand-out model has been the Duster SUV. The fi rst generation was rugged, reliable and basically fi nished inside, but it had an uncanny ability to ride comfortably over the worst of Irish roads, plus it was decently spacious and, of course, cheap to buy (in new car terms). Now there’s an all-new version and, shockingly, Dacia has managed to

keep most of the good bits of the original while noticeably improving the car’s refi nement and interior fi nishing. The looks are perhaps more divisive than they were, but the Duster now makes a better alternative to mainstream crossovers and SUVs than ever. There are petrol and diesel versions, though if you need four-wheel drive, then you’ll have to go with the diesel.

Dacia Sandero/Sandero Stepway
If you’re in the market for a simple, no frills new car then the Dacia Sandero is worth a look. It’s one of the most aff ordable new cars on sale, and the fi ve-door hatchback has a decent amount of space inside. Don’t expect many luxuries for your money, but all the basics are there including a colour touchscreen on Signature models. In keeping with the Dacia philosophy, the range is a simple aff air with one diesel and one petrol engine and only a manual gearbox. If you were looking for something a bit tougher looking there’s the Sandero Stepway. It’s a sort of crossover variant, with hard- wearing plastic on the bumpers and raised suspension, but don’t expect to be able to tackle much off -road as those additions are purely for image reasons, as front-wheel drive remains the only option.

Dacia Logan MCV/MCV Stepway
For all intents and purposes, the Dacia Logan MCV (standing for Maximum Capacity Vehicle) is a Sandero estate with a simply massive boot. It starts at a ludicrously low price for a new estate of such capacity, but it’s a little rough around the edges at the entry-point of the range. Buyers can choose from modest petrol or diesel engines. And while we fi nd it diffi cult to get excited about the standard Logan MCV, there’s something hugely appealing about the Stepway versions. These get a rugged makeover that really alters the appearance of the car, with raised ride height, a decent set of wheels and extra body cladding. Sadly, there’s no four-wheel-drive transmission to go with the image, but it’s still a tempting alternative.
