Range Rover Velar

Unquestionably one of the most stylish SUVs to come onto the market in recent years, the Range Rover Velar oozes class - providing you go for a high spec version with large wheels. Seeing a Velar in more basic trim wipes some of the shine from its design. Nevertheless, there is plenty to like about it. From the door handles that retract fl ush with the bodywork to

the large touchscreens inside, the Velar is a car that you aren’t likely to tire of any time soon. All models come with all-wheel drive, and a variety of engines range in power from 180- to 300hp, though for most the lower outputs will suffi ce. Be warned, it’s a car that can get very expensive very quickly when it comes to choosing options.

Range Rover Evoque

The all-new Range Rover Evoque doesn’t look all that diff erent, but it is entirely new. Minor styling changes won’t upset existing owners, and the similarities to the larger Velar model galvanise its desirability. All engines bar the entry-level 150hp engine will come with automatic transmissions and all-wheel drive, so while you can be seen around town in it, you’ll also be able to tackle the muddy slopes in the countryside. Most engines also feature mild hybrid technology to help lower fuel consumption. As you might expect, the cabin is a luxurious aff air with cosseting seats and slick new infotainment. There are some smart features like a camera system that can show you on the display if you risk kerbing your alloy wheels and there’s an array of driver assistance systems for on- and off -road scenarios.

Land Rover Discovery

There’s nothing small about the Land Rover Discovery; in fact, it’s not much diff erent in size to the Range Rover. Nowadays, the Discovery is a sleeker SUV that looks and feels more upmarket than before, though some aspects of its styling continue to polarise opinion. Looks aside, it off ers acres of space inside with the choice of fi ve- or seven-seat confi gurations, and should you have a desire to take it off -road, it is impressively capable on rough terrain. It helps that it also has some very smart technology to take the stress out of doing so. Previously, the Discovery enjoyed great success selling as a fi ve-seat commercial and, while the rules surrounding these vehicles has changed, Land Rover does still sell a two-seat commercial version. Most of the 2.0- and 3.0-litre diesel engine versions fall under the same taxation category, but if your budget permits, we recommend the more powerful 3.0-litre engine.
