OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Niro plug-in hybrid

Kia Niro The Niro is Kia’s electrifi ed champion coming in a variety of guises including regular hybrid, plug- in hybrid and fully electric. Its crossover styling makes the most of space inside. In hybrid form it uses a 1.6-litre petrol engine that is supported by a small on-board battery to help lower emissions and fuel consumption. It’s fully automatic and, like the regular Toyota Prius, doesn’t need to be plugged in. However, Kia does also produce a PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) version that can travel up to 58 kilometres on its larger battery alone. After that is exhausted, the petrol engine kicks in automatically without interruption. If you can charge it at home and frequently make short trips, this car could dramatically slash your running costs. However, it’s the arrival of the fully electric e-Niro in 2019 with a promise of 485 kilometres of driving range that is most interesting. A cheaper version with a smaller battery and shorter driving range will also be available.
