Audi A8 Audi’s luxury fl agship has always been a subtle car, and so it remains with the latest, though the sombre exterior uses jewel-like lighting featuring the latest technology, so it’s never what you’d call boring. The cabin is arguably its most important feature, as it’s designed to transport its occupants in exalted comfort and luxury. Every switch and surface is beautifully made and this sense of quality is paired with cutting-edge technology in the form of Audi’s latest digital dashboard and dual-touchscreen interface. This robs the A8 of stowage space in the cabin, but it looks very impressive and works well, too. There’s loads of space in the rear of the A8, too, and the outside world is kept at bay by high levels of sound deadening. You’ll struggle to hear the mighty 3.0-litre diesel engine working hard, which makes the A8 deceptively fast. There’s an even more powerful petrol option, but the diesel works best.

Having arrived in 2016, the second-generation Audi Q5 remains one of the most appealing cars in the class. It looks sharp on the outside and demonstrates excellent build quality inside. Ample space for passengers and adequate boot space are a match for some of the best in the sector, too. You get the choice of petrol and diesel engines, but we recommend sticking with the latter here. The high levels of sound insulation in the cabin make it very quiet on the move, and the automatic transmission is very smooth. The sportier SQ5 version features a petrol V6 engine with 354hp, though it carries a high price tag, which gives it very limited appeal.

Though technically the Audi Q7 sits below the Q8 in the line-up, the former is a larger and more practical car. That’s because most of the range seats seven. The exception is the Q7 e-tron 3.0 TDI quattro a plug-in hybrid version that has just fi ve seats. Nonetheless, that car has a vast boot. As do all models if you (electrically) fold down the rearmost seats. Elsewhere, the Q7 lags behind the latest of the large Audis in terms of technology, but by any other measure it’s a well-equipped and high-quality large SUV option, competing against the likes of the BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE. The Q7 makes for a great tow vehicle, too.
