Skoda Octavia


OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Octavia Combi 2.0 TDI 150 DSG Style


As everyday cars go, the Skoda Octavia has to be one of the best – divisive 2017 facelift aside, which brought in fussy quad headlamps. However, don’t let that put you off . The Octavia’s real trick is that it straddles classes, because, while it’s built on the same platform as the Volkswagen Golf, it has a bigger, fastback body and so it feels vast inside, both in terms of passenger space and boot capacity; there’s also a Combi estate model, if you need 610 litres of load-lugging ability. There are superb engines across the board, culminating in the fast RS models, and good refi nement make the Octavia an almost no-brainer choice in the C-segment.


Skoda Citigo


OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Citigo fi ve-door 75hp


The Citigo city car shares much of its DNA with the SEAT Mii and Volkswagen up!. You can choose between three- and fi ve-door body styles, though it’s the latter that makes more sense. A 1.0-litre petrol engine is available in 60- and 75hp outputs and again we’d recommend the latter as the extra bit of power makes all the diff erence in a car of this size. If you live in a city or built-up area where traffi c is heavy and parking is at a premium, then the Citigo will prove its worth. Like its cousins, though, access to the rear seats is quite limited, even in the fi ve-door car. It drives well, though.

Skoda Fabia


OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Fabia Ambition 1.0 TSI


The Skoda Fabia is one of those good honest cars that isn’t trying to be something it’s not. Having received a subtle facelift for 2019, the Fabia continues to be one of the roomiest superminis on the market, and, if you need more space again, there’s the option of an estate version called the Combi, which is a very useful car indeed. Aside from the space, the slightly raised seating position makes it easy to get in and out of all versions of the Fabia, and the visibility from the driver’s seat is mostly unobstructed. Two types of 1.0-litre petrol engines are available, a lower powered MPI unit with 60- or 75hp and a turbocharged version with up to 110hp. The Active specifi cation grade is rather basic, but the mid-level Ambition off ers more. If you’re after a racier look, the Fabia Monte Carlo adds red paint with a contrasting black roof and faux carbon fi bre inside.
