OUR PICK OF THE RANGE A 200 AMG Line

Mercedes-Benz A-Class The latest A-Class is every bit the premium small car with stylish looks and a top-notch interior. Spend more to go for the top specifi cation grade and you’ll have levels of tech usually only seen on an S-Class. The use of augmented reality for the satnav to pinpoint junctions and turn off s feels very futuristic to use. The sporty Mercedes-AMG A 35 gets 306hp and all-wheel drive and there’s an even more potent version in the works. Following up the hatchback in 2019 is a new A-Class Saloon (left). Mercedes says that the A-Class Saloon is the most aerodynamic in the world, so expect refi nement and good fuel economy.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class

A brand-new generation of the Mercedes B-Class arrives in 2019, but the recipe is unchanged from the previous model. It’s still a tall(ish) fi ve-seat people carrier (or ‘Sports Tourer’ according to its maker) with upright seating and easy access. There’s loads of headroom and legroom, though perhaps not as much space for child seats as you might hope for. Still, an optional sliding rear seat allows you to choose between more boot space or passenger comfort. The all-digital dashboard is shared with the A-Class and it’s excellent, as is the sense of quality. The B-Class is less sporty to drive than the A-Class, too, though comes with almost all the same engine and trim level options.

Mercedes-Benz CLA

We know that a brand-new version of the compact four-door CLA coupe will be unveiled in 2019, but at the time of writing we’ve yet to see what it will look like, so we’ve got to assume it will continue where this one left off . Hopefully it will be a little larger in the back, as this car isn’t the most spacious. Its successor also needs to allow buyers choose more comfortable suspension options, as this one is too fi rm in all guises. Refi nement is a bit of an issue, too. If all that makes it sound as if we don’t like the CLA, we should point out that we do love the compact size, wide availability of petrol and diesel engines and the quirky Shooting Brake ‘estate’ body style.
