Volkswagen T-Roc
Volkswagen, traditionally quite a conservative manufacturer, has recently started launching some more daring designs and the T-Roc C-segment crossover is one of them. It arrived late in 2017 and sits on the same platform as the Golf, which means it uses much the same engines – spanning the gamut of petrol and diesel engines ranging from 1.0- to 2.0-litre in size and 115- to 150hp. Manual and automatic gearboxes are on the options list, as are both front- and four-wheel drive (the latter badged as 4Motion), so there’s plenty of choice for buyers interested in this funky-looking, youthful crossover.

Volkswagen up!
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Move up! 1.0 75hp
With so little to separate the competition in the small city car segment when it comes to size and space, it is often pricing that determines what comes out on top. The Volkswagen up! isn’t the cheapest car in the segment, but it does have one of the best levels of fi nish amongst its rivals, so if you’re less restricted on budget you can get what is a rather lovely small car. Like the SEAT Mii and Skoda Citigo it shares so much with, there is a 60hp petrol engine for starters, but it’s the 75hp motor that we think is better suited to the up!, though it now only comes with an automatic transmission.
Volkswagen Polo
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Polo Comfortline 1.0 TSI manual
If there’s one name in the supermini marketplace that stands for unimpeachable quality and urbane manners, it’s the Volkswagen Polo. Now into its sixth generation, a lineage stretching right back to 1975, the Polo continues to off er the best cabin and the smoothest ride in the class. There are engines to suit all tastes, from modest 65hp three-cylinder petrol options to the 200hp GTI performance model, and the interior is characterised by the option of having a large, slick-to-operate touchscreen infotainment and even a digital instrument cluster. The Polo, though, isn’t cheap compared to rivals and it’s not the most exciting thing to drive in its class – even as the range-topping GTI (above).
