JEEP

Jeep Cherokee

There’s a new Jeep Cherokee arriving in 2019 and it comes with far less divisive styling than its predecessor, while looking very much like a Jeep, of course. It’s not a bad car at all, with decent refi nement, space and equipment. It comes with a 2.2-litre diesel engine in various power outputs and four-wheel drive. There’s even a

more off -road focused Trailhawk model for those that expect to test that four- wheel-drive system to the maximum. But let’s face it, few buyers of SUVs of this size need such capability and the Cherokee just isn’t comfortable enough on the road to compete with the premium marques that Jeep has priced it against.

Jeep Renegade

Few models in the compact crossover segment have as much character or charm as the Jeep Renegade. This small, boxy SUV is highly distinctive and looks great when painted in one of the vibrant colours available. The square shape also means that its roomy inside, with good amounts of headroom in particular, while the boot is a decent size, too. Among the improvements for this year is the introduction of a new 120hp 1.0-litre petrol engine with front-wheel drive. This setup suits the car well. You can get the Renegade with all-wheel drive by choosing the larger diesel engine. For the more adventurous there is a Trailhawk model that is better set up for driving over the rough stuff .

Jeep Compass

Easily the most civilised model in Jeep’s range, the Compass is an alternative to popular crossovers and SUVs like the Nissan Qashqai and Hyundai Tucson. The chunky styling of the Compass looks good with features such as the iconic seven-slot Jeep grille and squared-off wheel arches. Only the range-topping model gets all-wheel drive, so for the most part, with power going to just the front wheels, this is one Jeep that won’t be going too far off the beaten track. That’s probably of little worry to most SUV buyers, where practicality and interior quality are of greater importance, and here the Compass stands up to comparison with the rest of the sector. It drives well and provides a comfortable ride quality, too.
