Toyota GT86
The result of a joint project between Toyota and Subaru, the GT86 coupe nevertheless outsells its mechanically identical relation (the Subaru BRZ) by a factor of about 10:1. We’re not sure why that would be, other than the name ‘GT86’ relates to an old, 1980s Corolla called the AE86, which is now a cult car referred to by Irish car enthusiasts as the ‘Twin Cam’. Or it could just be that Toyota tapped into customers’ desire to have a sweet-handling machine that provides immense fun at road-legal speeds. There are problems with the GT86, like its dated interior and the fact its normally aspirated, boxer-four engine lacks torque, but you’ll soon forget about these minor issues when you’re driving it.

Toyota Hilux
The Toyota Hilux is something of a legend in the world of pick-ups. Heavily engineered to ensure it is ready to cope with almost anything that’s thrown at it, the Hilux has proven itself all over the world in some of the most demanding conditions, so it shouldn’t be too troubled on (and off ) the road in Ireland. Only the entry-level model is available as a single cab, but with the surge in popularity of pick-ups, it’s the double cab that makes far more sense as a purchase. The 2.4-litre diesel engine isn’t as refi ned as those found in most SUVs, but remember, this is a workhorse. It can be purchased with manual or automatic transmissions, and the all-wheel-drive system can be set up to suit the conditions at hand.

Toyota Land Cruiser
As nameplates go, the Land Cruiser is one of the automotive world’s ‘stayers’ – it has been around for more than 65 years, during which time it has developed an enviable reputation for incredible reliability and go-anywhere capability. To that end, you have to swallow some compromises with the latest model: it’s a nine-year-old vehicle that has been mildly updated during 2018, while it sits on a ladder-frame platform and has just one four-cylinder turbodiesel engine available to it. Therefore, on roads, it’s a little basic to drive… but it is unstoppable off -road and in bad weather, which is why people who absolutely need them love Land Cruisers so much.
