Kia Ceed
No longer featuring a silly apostrophe in its name, the Kia Ceed has matured into what is now one of the most polished cars in the highly competitive C-segment. That comes in the face of stiff competition from alternatives like the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf, making it a serious achievement for the Korean company. There’s a choice of fi ve-

door hatchback or a spacious estate and three diff erent engines. We like the 1.0-litre petrol, though if you’re still not ready to part ways with diesel, Kia’s new 1.6-litre diesel is one of the better ones. The Ceed is a lovely car to drive with light, but accurate steering and a suspension setup that’s well sorted and will perform well on Irish roads.

Kia Picanto
The entry point to the Kia range is the Picanto, a small car that’s big on character with styling that’s similar to the cars sitting above it. We think it’s one of the more appealing vehicles in this part of the market. It makes the most of its space inside and has a boot that is reasonably sized, too. Its 1.0-litre engine with 67hp isn’t what you’d call rapid, but it’s not exactly sluggish either. A more powerful 84hp 1.2-litre engine is available with a higher specifi cation grade, but regardless of which you choose, if you’re predominantly sticking to urban driving, the Picanto will serve you well.

Kia Rio
The Kia Rio has a tough gig, competing as it is with such stalwarts of the supermini class as the Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Polo and Toyota Yaris. Other than its seven-year warranty, the Rio doesn’t really do anything or have anything unique that sets it apart from that trio – and there are plenty of other rivals in the class. That’s not to say that there’s much wrong with the Rio, we should add. It’s a competent, polished package that’s quite refi ned, quite comfortable and quite good to drive. The standard equipment list is fairly extensive, in fairness, and it should prove reliable, too, but the line-up is very limited.
