OUR PICK OF THE RANGE ix20 Deluxe 1.4 diesel manual

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Santa Fe 4WD Executive Plus auto

Hyundai Santa Fe

The Hyundai Santa Fe requires no introduction. The fourth generation of the name launched in Ireland in 2018 and with it came a noticeable step up in aspiration for the car. It really is a luxury model now, with the refi nement (and pricing) to match. And yet, look closer, and you’ll discover it’s still laden down with equipment and it’s a seriously family-friendly SUV, with seven seats and a focus on comfort and refi nement. Motive force comes solely from a 2.2-litre diesel engine, though buyers can choose manual or automatic transmissions and four-wheel drive if they need it.

Hyundai ix20

When we wrote about the ix20 last year, we expected it to be its last, but it’s still on the pricelist from Hyundai Ireland, soldiering along. You buy this car mostly because you want the elevated driving position and seats, making it easy to get in and out of. There aren’t many of these types of fi ve-door MPVs left on the market as they’re not seen as desirable, but they are practical. The ix20 can be had with either petrol or diesel power, in a single trim level, and there’s an automatic option for the petrol engine, too. The petrol models are really ineffi cient, though.

Hyundai Ioniq The Hyundai Ioniq is a fi ve-door hatchback off ered in three fl avours – regular Hybrid, Plugin Hybrid and Electric. No vagueness there. The Hybrid best suits those that will use the car a lot and may not have easy access to a charge point. The Electric doesn’t have a range as long as that of the newer Hyundai Kona Electric, so we don’t expect much demand for it until its battery pack is upgraded, so our pick of the line-up is the Plugin Hybrid variant. It off ers the best of both worlds in a relatively normal looking package. All versions of the Ioniq are packed with equipment and come with a spacious interior and big boot. Think of it as an alternative to the Toyota Prius.
