Subaru XV

The XV is one of the most appealing cars in Subaru’s range, serving up the advantage of increased ground clearance and a proven all-wheel-drive transmission that is among the best and most reliable in the market. While it may not look all that diff erent to its predecessor, the interior sees a noticeable step up in quality. A Premium version adds leather upholstery, satellite navigation and a powered driver’s seat. Both petrol engines fall under the same annual motor tax band and aren’t separated much by cost. However, the lack of a diesel option may deter some buyers.

Subaru Impreza

The Subaru Impreza of today is a far cry from that of the past. Gone are the huge bonnet scoops and rear wings. Now the Impreza is a sensible fi ve-door hatchback. It does retain a ‘boxer’ petrol engine, though, a modest 114hp 1.6-litre that’s matched to a CVT automatic gearbox and all-wheel-drive transmission. Despite lacking outright pace, it is a comfortable car to drive and it ranks highly for crash safety too. Its interior feels solid, although it isn’t the last word in design nor materials used. Subaru does enjoy a healthy reputation for reliability and it comes with a generous fi ve-year warranty.

Subaru Forester

With its roots in Subaru’s golden era of fast Imprezas and rally success, the Forester began life as a cult car in the 1990s, but, by the current fourth generation, it has become a fairly straightforward, midsized crossover-SUV. There’s still a no-nonsense appeal about the Forester, which is upright and four-wheel drive and likely to be hugely reliable, but the unusual engine choices (two petrols, one diesel, only two of them turbocharged but the most attainable being an underpowered 2.0-litre petrol) and uninvolving driving experience don’t help to make the Subaru stand out. However, it was improved with added EyeSight safety kit and a mild facelift in 2018, making it an unusual alternative to the mainstream.
