OUR PICK OF THE RANGE X4 xDrive25d M Sport
First time around, the BMW X4 polarised opinion with its coupe-like looks on an SUV body. The formula might remain the same for this second-generation model, but its execution is far better. The X4 shares much with the BMW X3, though its raked profi le sets them well apart visually. A touch less boot space is one of the few compromises and rear passenger comfort remains good despite the sloping roofl ine. In keeping with the sportier image, the suspension and handling are tweaked, resulting in a car that is surprisingly good fun to drive. It doesn’t skimp on the fi ner things either, with good sound insulation and a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission. We think this second iteration of the X4 is a much better package than its predecessor.

The all-new BMW X5 arrived in Ireland just in time for the 191 registration period and it really is a serious piece of kit. Bigger than ever, the new X5 takes the established formula of premium SUV-ness and adds a new layer of luxury and technology. Air suspension is standard now, for example, as is a gorgeous-looking digital dashboard. The rest of the cabin is sumptuously appointed and mixes some really high-quality materials with the latest tech. It seats up to seven as before and while most owners will use it solely on the road, BMW off ers options to let the X5 go much further off the beaten track than you’d ever imagine possible.
