Editor’s Choice

Audi A3 Despite now being one of the oldest models in Audi’s expansive range, the A3 remains a very impressive car that still stands up well against fresher rivals. The A3 covers several bases, off ering both hatchback and saloon versions along with a four-seat cabriolet. It is ideal for those looking for a small but premium car. The saloon is attractive looking, adding a large capacity boot that makes it suitable for both business and family users. Both the diesel and petrol off erings perform well and, if you can include the cost of the automatic transmission in your budget,

then it is a worthwhile addition. If you’re in the market for something with more performance, then the S3 versions should tick the box. With a 310hp 2.0-litre engine and quattro all-wheel drive, they deliver on pace and grip the road, making them ideal year- round performance cars. However, for the pure petrolhead, the RS 3 will be even more enticing. Available in fi ve-door hatchback or saloon styles, it features a 400hp 2.5-litre petrol engine. Blistering performance and an intoxicating engine note make this one of the most exciting cars around.

Audi A1

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE A1 Sportback 30 TFSI S line

A brand-new A1 hatchback launches in 2019, hoping to take the fi ght to the MINI. Due to poor sales, the three-door version has been dropped, so the fi ve-door A1 Sportback is the only body style to choose from. Also, it appears that Audi will not off er diesel versions of this new A1. Instead, there’s a range of petrol engines, kicking off with the most impressive option, a three-cylinder 1.0-litre unit. There will be 1.5- and 2.0-litre engines, too, but we reckon they don’t suit the A1 at all and the smallest unit works best in terms of refi nement, performance and running costs. The new A1 is more aggressive looking than before, comes with cool LED lights as standard and a vast array of personalisation options. It’s bigger than its predecessor, too, with more rear passenger space and boot volume. An appealing car, that’s for sure.

Audi A4

The Audi A4 is a competent and refi ned saloon that primarily goes up against the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes- Benz C-Class. Its understated styling will appeal to some, but we reckon it’s almost too subtle. Nonetheless, the high-quality interior can be fi tted with an all-digital instrument cluster and full smartphone connectivity through the infotainment system. There is a choice of petrol engines, ranging from 150- to 252hp, but most buyers will be more interested in the 2.0-litre diesel option, available in 150- or 190hp guises. The latter is that bit better in general, though it is slightly less fuel effi cient. The refi nement levels in the A4 shine through on the move, where road noise is minimal, and the ride quality delivers on comfort without having any adverse eff ects on handling. The estate version, called Avant, is often overlooked, but serves as a useful alternative to an SUV - and Audi also off ers all-wheel-drive quattro models.
