Opel Astra

There is no shortage of good cars to choose from in the C-segment hatchback market, but we think that the Opel Astra is one of the more underrated. It might not have edgy styling and yes, the interior is a little dull, but it drives and handles very well, and the variety of engines on off er should suit most tastes and needs. The suspension does an excellent job of soaking up even the worst of road

surfaces while the steering is nicely weighted and accurate. You can choose from two diesel engines, but our pick is the smaller of the two petrol options. The 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine develops 105hp, for example, which is plenty for this car. An estate version called the Sports Tourer bumps carrying capacity up to a maximum of 1,630 litres and looks quite smart, too.

Opel Karl Opel Adam

Try as it might, the Opel Adam hasn’t got the same kerbside desirability or popularity as the Fiat 500 or MINI Hatch. There isn’t the same seemingly infi nite variety of colour combos as there once was in the line-up either, but there’s still plenty of choice. However, just the one engine is now available, a 100hp 1.4-litre petrol unit matched to a fi ve-speed manual gearbox. With 160 litres of boot space and almost unusable rear seats thanks to the minuscule legroom, the Adam isn’t the most practical of cars, nor the most appealing if we’re honest.

When it comes to the city car segment, there is very little to separate the rivals regarding size and space, so the Opel Karl doesn’t stand out. Sensibly, it comes only in a fi ve-door body style and it seats fi ve. Boot space measures in at 206 litres and can increase to 1,013 litres with the rear seats folded, making it one of the largest in its class. Though the Karl is small, it is a refi ned car and can be had with big-model extras such as heated seats. Available with only a 73hp 1.0-litre petrol engine, it has decent performance and low fuel consumption. A higher- riding Karl Rocks version attempts to add some crossover styling, though it is only slightly raised, so mounting footpaths are the extent of its off -road abilities.
