MINI Hatch
It might not be so ‘mini’ these days, but desirability for the BMW-owned MINI brand is as big as ever. The three-door hatch has evolved into quite a premium car, something that’s also refl ected in the pricing. You can get it in a variety of fl avours right up to a 231hp John Cooper Works model that is seriously good fun to drive. The fi ve-door version adds another layer of appeal as it gives the car a greater scope of usability. Neither are especially generous in terms of passenger space inside, but the quality of the interior makes up for it, and it’s available with some of the latest connectivity and cool ambient lighting. While many buy the MINI for its image and quality, it’s also remarkably good to drive. In any fl avour.

MINI Convertible
Nobody buys convertibles in Ireland. Think I’m exaggerating? Convertible sales in 2018 accounted for 0.15 per cent of the market. Hence, even a relatively aff ordable one like the MINI Convertible is sure to be a rare sight. And actually, the MINI has few direct rivals. Certainly none that mix its ability to seat four (ok, the rear isn’t the most comfortable, but as the driver, do you really care?) with its genuinely fun-to-drive chassis and wide range of engine and trim options. The MINI is a high-quality product, too, though we could do without some of the cheesy infotainment graphics and the LED rear lights shaped like the Union Jack… Still, the soft-top roof seals out bad weather well and those engines are perky and economical. Just pray for more summers like that of 2018.

MINI Clubman
If you love the look of the MINI, but fi nd the hatch just too restrictive for your lifestyle or needs, then the six-door Clubman makes for a great alternative. Yes, six doors, as the boot features two outwardly hinged doors. The looks are still very much MINI-themed and it’s still good fun to drive, retaining much of that MINI spirit. There’s a choice of engines and all-wheel drive should you so desire. Inside, there’s a blend of neat design matched with a boot that can swallow up to 1,250 litres of luggage. Passenger space isn’t overly generous, but if you’ve got young kids it works well as a funky family car.
