OUR PICK OF THE RANGE XJ 3.0 V6 SWB Premium Luxury
The XJ crowns Jaguar’s saloon range and does what the company is best-known for in delivering a luxuriously comfortable and refi ned driving experience. Its styling is quite understated, but it still stands out from the more familiar luxury saloons. Sensible buyers will likely choose the turbocharged diesel V6 engine; however, there is a stonking 510hp supercharged V8 petrol model to cater for those less concerned about fuel economy, although it is wildly expensive. When you begin to compare it to rivals, the Jaguar starts to look and feel dated. A longer wheelbase is available, though you’d probably consider this only if you’re a professional driver or chauff eur. While the XJ was a plush saloon when new, it is now outshone by most of its competitors and should be due for replacement in the next year or two.

Jaguar F-Type Here’s a hint at what the Jaguar F-Type is all about: the entry-level car has 300hp. Yes, there’s no doubt about it; the F-Type is a sports car. Buyers can choose from Coupe or Convertible models and while hearing the sonorous engines better in the latter is appealing, we’d go for the Coupe every time – and not just because of Irish weather. The Coupe is even more attractive to look at and it has a much larger boot. Both are two-seat
cars, incidentally. That entry-level version isn’t bad, but its engine is a four-cylinder unit, so it’s not as charismatic as the V6s and V8s further up the range. The V8s are supercar fast, but quite unnecessary, as the supercharged V6 has oodles of performance and character. If the prospect of that much power going through the rear wheels fi lls you with trepidation, you’ll be glad to hear that there’s an all-wheel-drive option, too.
