Although the Renault Clio seems like it has been an ever-present member of the supermini class, perhaps almost for as long as the Ford Fiesta, in fact it’s a much newer vehicle – launching to great success in the 1990s and now into its fourth incarnation. It has built some of its reputation over the years on the high-performance Renault Sport versions, although the current turbocharged version is a little lacklustre, but it remains – as a regular hatchback – a competent all- rounder. It doesn’t stand out in one particular area, although its looks are a strength, but as a stylish alternative to the default Fiesta, Corsa and Polo choices, the Clio is still right up there.


Renault Scenic


The Renault Scenic is a car in which the designers’ dramatic on-paper sketches have translated into the production reality. Riding on 20-inch wheels as standard, to ensure it looks proportionally correct, the Scenic Mk4 is a truly attractive MPV and that’s not a phrase you hear often. Thankfully, the interior is clever too (depending on version), with a sliding centre armrest in the front that alters centre-legroom in the rear and also a full array of storage compartments and cubbies. It also comes in two sizes: the regular Scenic, for fi ve people, and the larger Grand Scenic, which can accommodate seven. While no great shakes to drive, the Scenic is refi ned and therefore a top-notch family conveyance.

Renault Zoe There’s a growing number of electric vehicles coming to the market now that off er very usable real-world driving ranges, but the Renault Zoe has been doing so for a couple of years already. We reckon it’s the most underrated EV on the market and, while it may be smaller in size than most other electric cars on the market, it is nevertheless a good car

to drive. The Z.E. 40 variant should manage a genuine 280 kilometres between charges if you’re sticking to urban driving, too. The fi ve-door hatchback styling looks smart and hides its rear door handles in the C-pillars. Previously, you had to lease the battery, but now you can purchase the car outright, making it a more hassle-free experience.


Renault Captur


The Captur has been a hugely successful model for Renault in the compact crossover segment since its introduction and it’s easy to see why. Not only does it off er a compelling blend of style and functionality, it’s one of the better vehicles in the class to drive, with decent handling and a good suspension setup that makes it feel more car than crossover. The tall roof, which you can have painted in a contrasting colour, adds to the sense of space inside and the boot isn’t a bad size at 455 litres. The prospect of a 0.9-litre petrol engine in a car this big might seem unnerving, but it suits the car to a tee, though the diesel version makes the Captur feel more solid and grown up.
