OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Golf GTI 2.0 TSI

Volkswagen Golf

Few models are as widely known or have been as successful as the Volkswagen Golf. The seventh generation is coming to an end soon, but it remains a very popular car and understandably so. Available in three- and fi ve-door hatchback guises, or as an estate, it’s a versatile car, and the range of engines and model derivatives ranks as one of the most varied in the industry. Standard models come with petrol and diesel engines

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Sharan Comfortline 2.0 TDI DSG

ranging from 1.0- to 2.0-litre capacities. A plug-in hybrid model is available, too, as is a fully electric model called the e-Golf. On the sportier side, there’s the front-wheel-drive Golf GTI and a beefy diesel Golf GTD, while the all-wheel-drive Golf R packs a mighty 300hp punch. Regardless of which model you choose, what they all have in common is a thoroughly enjoyable driving experience and top-notch build quality inside to match.

Volkswagen Touran Volkswagen Sharan

Originally created as part of a joint project between Volkswagen, SEAT and Ford, the Sharan is a large, seven-seat MPV that has been on sale for more than 30 years across two generations. The Ford connection was lost with this second-gen vehicle, which launched in 2010, but the current Sharan is still closely related to the SEAT Alhambra. That means the Sharan is a simply brilliant family MPV, with large sliding doors, a fully confi gurable seating arrangement in the cabin, a strong turbocharged diesel engine and loads of interior storage. It might not be a particularly exciting car, but it’s one that is entirely fi t for purpose.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Touran Highline 1.0 TSI

Volkswagen, while having plenty of choice in its SUV line-up, continues to be a manufacturer that believes in the practicality of the MPV. There are few automotive companies that do nowadays, but it soldiers on and still off ers two. There’s the full-sized Sharan at the top of the range, but if you want something more compact in terms of road footprint that can still carry up to seven people, then it’s the mid-sized Touran you need. It comes with a range of excellent engines and technology from the Volkswagen Golf, while there are no fewer than 48 cubby holes and storage compartments crammed into its clever, high-quality interior. It’s getting on a bit, but is still an excellent family car.
