OUR PICK OF THE RANGE i40 Tourer 1.7 diesel Executive

Hyundai i30

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE i30 1.6 diesel Deluxe Plus

The Hyundai i30 range is worth sitting up and taking notice of. Along with the Golf-rivalling fi ve-door i30 hatchback and Tourer estate, there’s a very attractive i30 Fastback model, plus a serious high-performance derivative in the form of the i30 N. It’s a shame that the Fastback, below (also a fi ve-door car, but with a more sloped rear) is sold solely with a petrol model, as we reckon it’s the choice of the range in terms of appearance. The i30 N (above) makes for a hardcore alternative to the Golf GTI (and it really is that good), the i30 Tourer is hugely spacious and the regular hatchback proves to be a high-quality off ering that majors on refi nement. The 1.6-litre diesel engine is one of the quietest in the class.

Hyundai i40

Justifi ably, the Hyundai i40 has carved itself out a niche of loyal saloon buyers in Ireland. It’s a spacious, well-equipped and comfortable D-segment car that really has taken the fi ght to the likes of the Ford Mondeo and Volkswagen Passat. We particularly like the look and usefulness of the i40 Tourer estate. There’s a good range of trim levels to choose from, but only one engine, a 1.7-litre diesel, available with manual or automatic gearboxes. We expect the i40 to receive an update at some stage in 2019, in line with the introduction of the Tucson’s newer 1.6-litre diesel engine, making it a solid choice for those that cover plenty of motorway mileage.

Hyundai Kona

Hyundai’s compact crossover, the Kona, is bold, especially in some of the brighter paintwork options, but opt for a subtler choice and it looks better to our eyes. Despite the polarising exterior, inside it’s more conventional. A clearly laid out dashboard with easy-to-reach controls looks and feels well made, but the Kona’s interior isn’t the most spacious in the segment. You get the choice of a perky 1.0-litre petrol or frugal 1.6-litre diesel engine. There is an

all-wheel-drive version off ered, but this is only available in conjunction with the more powerful 1.6-litre petrol engine. Hyundai also off ers a fully electric variant called the Kona Electric. Initially available with a high-capacity 64kWh battery, it is one of the best EVs on sale, with an offi cial driving range in excess of 440 kilometres (WLTP) and fast- charging capability. All for a price much lower than the premium EVs on the market.
