Ford Focus

The latest Ford Focus sees the company’s hatchback return to the sharp end of the segment. There are several variants of the Focus available, such as the upmarket Vignale and more rugged Active models. As is becoming increasingly common in the C-segment, there are only fi ve-door and estate body styles available, and one of the benefi ts of the latest model is an increase in passenger space compared to the previous Focus, especially for those in the back. Another welcome addition is the noticeable step

up in cabin quality through the use of better materials and a higher standard of fi t and fi nish. The best feature of the current Ford Focus is how well it performs on Irish roads. The petrol engine suits the car well, while the diesel is one of the best around. The suspension and steering are perfectly judged making it excellent at covering ground on secondary roads while its increased refi nement makes motorway journeys even more comfortable resulting in a car that tops the segment.

Ford Ka+

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Ka+ Zetec

The Ka+ is the cheapest way into new Ford ownership, sitting below the Fiesta in the line-up and targeting urban buyers that don’t need or want a physically big car. Despite that, the Ka+ is a fi ve-door model, easing access to the rear – which is surprisingly capacious for the segment. It’s an inoff ensive-looking car, inside and out, though if you really want it to stand out, you can choose one of the sportier special editions or even the faintly ludicrous Ka+ Active, which features body add-ons that mimic the look of a crossover. All are powered by one of two 1.2-litre petrol engines and the only gearbox is a manual. It drives well and is quite refi ned, but we’d much rather a Fiesta.

36 Auto Ireland Guide to New Cars 2019 Ford Fiesta

The Ford Fiesta has long been a favourite in Ireland for its practical features and polished driving performance, and the current model looks set to continue building upon that strong reputation. This generation is slightly larger than before resulting in better space inside. The interior also takes a move upmarket, where most models feature a large free-standing touchscreen on the dash. In addition to the choice of three- or fi ve-door body styles, Ford off ers a broad range of model variants including the sporty ST-Line, posh Vignale model with leather upholstery and a crossover-themed Fiesta Active that has a noticeably comfortable ride. For enthusiasts, the high-performance Fiesta ST delivers a cracking drive with class-leading handling and a fabulous turbocharged petrol engine.
