OUR PICK OF THE RANGE C-HR 1.2T Manual Sport

Toyota C-HR

The bold design of the Toyota C-HR has quickly won it many fans, but it isn’t without its fl aws. The coupe-like profi le means it can be a little dark and claustrophobic in the rear, for example. Up front, it has a modern design with a large touchscreen display. Buyers have the choice of a very good 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine or a 1.8-litre petrol hybrid option, which is Toyota’s forte. The latter is only available with an automatic CVT transmission, which, providing you drive with a light right foot, should return reasonable fuel consumption if you’re sticking to slower urban driving. Engine choice aside, the stylish crossover handles very well, and the ride quality is well-suited to Irish roads.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Yaris Hybrid Luna

Toyota Aygo

The Toyota Aygo may share its mechanical underpinnings with the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108, but it is styled very diff erently. For 2019 it gets a slightly new look that should give it broader appeal, but this remains a limited segment of the market in Ireland. There’s a three-door version available, but we recommend sticking with the fi ve-door Aygo as it makes it much easier to get in and out of the rear. Just the one engine is available, a 1.0-litre petrol unit, but there is the option of an automatic gearbox. There are four specifi cation grades, but we see little point in going for anything other than the entry-level x-play version, as it comes with plenty of equipment, including a seven-inch touchscreen system.

Toyota Yaris

Just like the larger cars in the range, the Yaris supermini is also available with Toyota’s hybrid system, making it even more economical to run if you’re doing school runs or generally have short commutes. It feels well-made and solid throughout and you can choose from many exterior style packs for greater individualisation. Engines range from a conventional 1.0-litre petrol option to the 1.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid, the latter featuring an automatic transmission. With low-speed driving it will cover plenty of ground using only the battery and electric motor to propel the car, and it has the advantage of not requiring any plugging in to charge it up.
