BMW 3 Series
A brand-new BMW 3 Series arrives in 2019 and, having already driven several versions of it, we can confi dently say that it’s the best yet. For this generation, BMW says it focused once more on giving 3 Series buyers an engaging chassis, and it is defi nitely that. Time will tell if the more sedate versions will be comfortable enough for Irish roads. Other than that, the new 3 Series ramps up its equipment

count and technology, including a digital dashboard and a useful ‘digital assistant’ that responds to regular speech when you activate it by saying “Hey BMW!” Petrol and diesel models will be complemented by an all-new 330e plug-in hybrid version, while the excellent new M340i xDrive variant bridges the gap between those regular cars and the inevitable M3 sports saloon.

BMW 1 Series
As the BMW 1 Series is set for replacement later in 2019, with a front-wheel-drive car no less, this is pretty much your last chance to get hold of the only rear-drive premium hatchback in the sector. Sure, the 1 Series compromises on rear space and practicality because of its layout, but it makes up for that with engaging dynamics across the range, from the lowliest diesel 116d diesel to the 340hp M140i super-hatch. Impressive quality and surprising effi ciency are also hallmarks of this car.

BMW 2 Series Active/Gran Tourer
Unlike the other BMWs that carry the 2 Series name, the Active and Gran Tourer MPV models adopt a far more conventional appearance that is like no other in the entire BMW range. Available in fi ve-seat (Active Tourer) and seven-seat (Gran Tourer) versions, they are aimed at families that need space, although there are plenty of competitors that off er better packages at a lower price - albeit without the BMW badge. There’s a good range of engines and the choice of front- or all-wheel drive. A plug-in hybrid version capable of driving up to 41 kilometres on battery power alone may interest those who frequently make short trips and have somewhere to charge up the car.
