Skoda Scala
Skoda as a brand continues to go from Lexus ES
strength to strength. This coming year we’ll see a useful update for the Superb, including the introduction of Skoda’s first-ever hybrid car. There will also be a small new crossover to hit the market. On top of all that, there’s the Scala, largely replacing the unloved Rapid to rival cars like the Kia Ceed and Opel Astra. To do so, Skoda has given it a more stylish exterior and a cabin that not only offers generous levels of passenger space, but has some of the latest technology to ensure it is future-proofed. There isn’t any fancy hybrid system in the Scala, just a choice of conventional diesel and petrol engines and front-wheel drive, though there will also be the option of an automatic gearbox. Further up the price scale a tad will be the
eagerly-awaited Tesla Model 3, a four- door sports saloon that’s powered purely by electricity, sitting below the Model S and X in the American company’s line-up.
Mazda3 We’re hoping that Land Rover reveals
its next-generation Defender soon, as there’s huge interest in the replacement for what is unquestionably an iconic vehicle. Before that, though, we’ll witness the arrival of the new Range Rover Evoque. It doesn’t look radically different to the original, but it is all-new inside and out and will be available as a hybrid for the first time. Lexus must smell opportunity in the air
as we see diesel falling out of favour. Its all petrol and hybrid line-up appears poised to take advantage – and the Japanese company has plenty of new models in the pipeline. Early in 2019, the stylish-looking Lexus ES saloon will arrive, competing with the likes of the Audi A6, while the RC coupe gets an update and the LC sports car range is enhanced with an even faster LC F model. An all-new Mazda3 arrives for 2019 and,
on looks alone, it’s already off to a winning start. Available as a five-door hatchback and a four-door saloon, both cars get entirely different designs, with the saloon stepping
into the role as a junior to the highly regarded Mazda6. Mazda will offer diesel and petrol engines, with the latter to include a version using the company’s SkyActiv-X technology that boosts performance and fuel economy. Like the other German car makers,
Mercedes will be incredibly busy in 2019. We’ve already seen pictures of the lovely
GLE SUV, the stylish A-Class Saloon and the seriously fast AMG GT four-door, along with the all-electric EQC SUV. Joining those in the showrooms will be a new GLA crossover, an all-new CLA ‘four-door coupe’ and a new SUV called the GLB, which is expected to look rugged, but still be road- biased, like all its major competitors. A brand-new Porsche 911 goes on sale
in 2019 and it looks, well, it looks just like a Porsche 911. It really is new, though, and is likely to be the first-ever 911 to feature some form of electrification in the powertrain. Not long after that car goes on sale, we’ll get our first glimpse of the new Porsche Taycan, a sporty four-door powered purely by electricity.
Toyota RAV4 Volkswagen T-Cross
A major new product onslaught is happening
from Toyota in 2019. At the forefront of that will be a brand-new Corolla. The name is returning to the company’s C-segment hatchback and estate, and there’s an all-new four-door saloon, too. What’s more, all body styles can be had with petrol or hybrid power. We reckon that the company’s edgy new RAV4 SUV could do well, too, while further up the price range are the luxurious new Camry saloon and, for enthusiasts, a stunning new Toyota Supra. At the end of 2019 we’ll see the next-
generation Volkswagen Golf for the first time, a significant new car by any measure, though the German company will be talking about its new range of I.D. electric cars just as loudly so watch out for those. Ahead of all that will be an update for the Passat range and a stylish new small crossover called the T-Cross. AI
